French Subs

Bonjour tout le monde,

I am the "French Admin" for the French Translations, so I am in charge of updating the forum with new things, and also being in direct contact with Juan, the "official boss". Some things to note:

So far, we have:

TechGuy: contact to Juan, updates the forum here, and most likely proofreading as well.
BrendaLama: Translator, proofreader
François C: Proofreader
Yannick: Translator, proofreader, syncer
Coolman756: Translator, proofreader, syncer
Cobaltnightsky: syncer, proofreader

As well, coolman has set some "rules" to follow, to provide the best quality subs.

We have also set some rules to provide the best quality subtitles:

I suggest you to use VisualSubSync for making subtitles.
In order to provide good quality and easy-to-read subtitles, and also for more consistency in our work, you are encouraged to follow the standard rules of french subtitling, which are well explained in this guide: marcmarti.free.fr/telechargements/MethodeST.pdf

We have set up a GDrive to post on here, and (I believe) that I can add you guys onto the "granted" list of the GDrive. If not, contact cobaltnightsky for that. Either way, send one of us a PM of your email and we will set you up on "what is next", instructions provided in a nice document on the Drive itself. What you need to know right now, we have a process going on to provide quality over quantity. 5 episodes, make 'em, check 'em, edit 'em, send 'em. Simple.

Finally, the episodes that need to be done:

Salut !

I'd really like to help with the french subtitles. To introduce myself,I'm 17,I'm French and I just graduated from high school. I might lack of experience but my English grades had always been good as far as I remember (gravitating around 15 and 19 on 20 points), and I've been to USA last summer,so I don't have too much trouble understanding the american accent.
I also like video games,making videos, and what the nerd does,so I'd like to bring my contribution.

Just to let you know that I've done the AVGN episode 104 (Nintendo World Championships) and I'm 95% done with the Battletoads episode.

Please feel free to go check it out on youtube, as mike put the NWC french subs online allready. From what I understand, as of right now, no other french subs are online!

Je pense que la méthode la plus efficace pour tous ceux qui veulent participer à ce projet (et pour éviter la redondance!) c'est de venir voir sur ce forum si certains travaillent sur différents épisodes, mais aussi d'aller voir directement sur Youtube si l'épisode est déjà sous-titré en français ou non.

Si vous avez des questions n'hésitez pas à communiquer avec moi!

Hi! I would really enjoy to help for the translation of the AVGN episodes, but I don't understand how it works. Do I only write the subtitles and the time in a text document? Then, who I'm have to send the text to?
Finally, do the seven episodes you named (Battletoads, the four Castlevania episodes, Nintendo World Championship and ROB the robot) are the only episodes that are translated (or on the way)?

I'm a little bit confused, but as soon as I will know what to do, I'll do a lot of work!

If the team grows, some people should be assigned to specifical tasks. For example, rereading.
etc.

@Yannick Martin: No offense, your subtitles are not bad but there are a few things that need to be improved. For example, why did you put the characters' names in the subtitles? This isn't a script. And why did you put sounds into parenthesis? That's only for the hearing impaired. There's also way too much text per line and per second and lots of spelling mistakes. Your translation is pretty nice, but some rules need to be respected in order to make good subtitles. I suggest you to read the guide I posted above. Your work is far from being useless, though. Most of the timing can be kept and the same goes for the text.

I suggest to have different classes. People who have some experience at subtitling could go in a "Subtitling" class, others as "Rereading" (for spotting mispellings, grammatical inaccuracies and suggest a better translation), "Timing" (for making the timing better, etc.). We need to organize if we want to work efficiently but if we do, it should be pretty quick.

I suggest not sending the subtitles until they're all 100% done. It would be a mess otherwise. We must take all the time we need in order to create the best subtitles we can.

@Rafiki, we need ALL the episodes done, the ones mentioned are the ones in progress right now. If you want to help out, go for it.

@coolman756, We can do that. But how are we going to combine everything together, let alone check things? Upload the French Subs to a site or something, or email perhaps, so we can check our mistakes/proofread? Because if you want, the subs can be emailed to me (or to whoever), and I can upload to another site or a file sharing site. We'll need the files to make this work out.

As well, tell your group members to make an account here. We won't be effective unless we have everyone on board here.

EDIT: Once we have it all proofread, before Sunday, send it to Juan, with all of the subs made during that week into a nice little ZIP folder. Find more info in the forum about it.

Well, what we could use is Google Drive, that's what my group and I were already using. It's far from being perfect, though, so please tell it if you come up with a better solution.

Google Drive could work. However, we would need access to it. Skydrive could also work.

I can update the list here, of who is doing what, so there isn't a problem there.

But the Google Drive thing is a good idea, Skydrive is also an option as well. (I have the ability of Skydrive if need be.)

But, if you have already created an email for the French Subs, use the Google Drive on that, but the people that are helping out will need access to it. We will try it out.

In the meantime, I am trying my best to work on the translations, but I haven't had the time yet. :/. However, if you guys finish the translations, we will experiment with the Google Drive and I can take a peek at the subs so far if there are any errors, or any improvements to be made.

If we know who is doing what, along with coolman's group, and everyone else, I'll update the list of episodes on who is doing what.

Bear in mind that we can also translate the Misc. game episodes that Cinemassacre uploads. That is also something we need to do.

Is .srt the right file extension or do you need another ,like .zip or .txt ?

SRT can be opened in Notepad, but coolman has pointed a program that is an alternative to timing everything.

As for the sending part, send it to the email provided earlier (french.avgn.srt...) and someone, who has access to the "drive", will proofread.

Then, afterwards, we'll send it to Juan if its good, and probably will provide pointers on the forum on "what to improve" on spelling, grammar, little things like that.

In short: Send it to coolman, someone will proofread, and then send to Juan. Simple.

My only problem is I can't run the program previously pointed out,because I have a Mac (that is also an old piece of shit) . I have no choice but using Subs Factory,even if it's free it seems pretty good and i feel like i can work decently with it.
But if you guys have a better program that I can run on my old piece of crap,I'll download it Like a Star @ heaven

As long as it does the format that Youtube accepts (check on here for examples) you'll be fine. Just post on here what episodes you are doing and I'll update the post.

To all
I just discussed with Coolman and we guessed it would be a good idea to

1) do an OFFICIAL introduction song translation (always re-used)
2) create an " AVGN thesaurus" in which insults and other recurrent sentences can be "officially" used

Perhaps we can vote it (with doodle or any google thing) and feed a shared document in which anyone can pickup these sentences, insults and etc...

what do you think?

To my opinion, that's the best way to proceed, to keep the "french AVGN spirit" all along the episodes.
