some news!
Hello everyone!
Sorry about the late reply, I was moving the last few days and been quite busy
@TechGuy691 : I totally agree on everything you said, and as you guys probably noticed, I did those first 2 (NWC & Battletoads) BEFORE you came in with this awesome structure. Vincent contacted me through email and I sent him the 2 .srt files I did so far so you can modifiy them as you see fit. I'm glad if it helps! Oh, why does it says [rocko] on the 2 episodes I make?
I started the ROB the Robot episode allready but before going further I want to make sure it's ok for you guys (to avoid duplicate work). I'll make sure to read those links you gave on the convention to follow regardings french subs.
Please if you need specific assistance for anything else let me know!

ah, I know where the [rocko] comes from!
I saw it on the list, first page. So I do not know why it appears with this nickname in the first place.

re-edit
Good! So it was a mistake
I'm reediting and proofreading (thanks to Microsoft Word!) the Battletoads and NWC episodes so it can fit the stardards, it will be re-uploaded to the GDRive shortly.
Thanks

What software to use to download videos from YouTube ?
Hi there,
I've successfully downloaded VSS and would start working on test #10 Top Gun. My issue is : which software should I use to download the video from YouTube ?
Despite my old age of 34 I'm really a noob when it comes to computers and technology. I read in a post earler that someone was using KeepVid, but I'd really love a very simple-to-use thing, so what would the majority of you recommend, please ?
I'd gladly do test #32 Atari Porn afterwards, I had a blast watching those old porn games I never knew existed. :-)
Merci
François

Yannick, Rocko posted here earlier, but he "removed his message", so thats why it is up there. I cannot get ahold of him, I think he is hauled up in work. I'll make the changes to the forum. And Yannick, no one else has claimed R.O.B., so you got it.
Welcome back, Yannick, and sorry for the confusion of things earlier.

I actually use KeepVid, and download an MP4, then use a video converter (I use Prism Video Converter) and convert it to WMV. There might be other programs that may download and convert it for you automatically, so I'll let the other have their go.

Thought I would do this, but the forum is updated with everyone's new things, plus a list of Mike's Game Videos that we could do in the near future.

Re: French Subs
Yep, i saw that, other topics are updated with new interesting things.
Regarding downloading the video, I use a FireFox plugin called "Easy Youtube Video Downloader" (a download button appears below the youtube video). So I can grab a simple mp4 file at 360 pixel (don't care the resolution since I only need it to do my timing) .
Then I convert it to avi/wmv with a software called format factory (pretty easy to use): Visualsubsync doesn't handle mp4 files very well (in my case, a 20 minutes video was shortened to 6).
@techguy: could you add the small process we use for new comers? That will make it clearer and don't have to repeat ourselves but rather pointing to that doc (i can do a shared gdoc file).
so far, the basics information to share are:
the full list of who does which episode
best pratices for subbing (and all information described in the Gdoc I sent you)
Where to upload a polished SRT or who to give it to (than means you, Techguy, Coolman756 or myself through french.avgn.srt@... ) ?
So far, we still need to know how to proceed with subbing and proofreading (as proposed by Coolman756)? it's important to keep the best level of translation possible.
We also need an official music translation. Perhaps someone can translate & sub and everyone can tell his/her feeling about it? Then if everyone is happy with it, to go ahead? what about that?
Regarding the thesaurus for James mean language, I thought of something different: sometimes it depends on the context the way you translate it. Perhaps we could give various suggestions for a singe expression.
For instance:
hard fuck:
chier des briques
en chier
etc...
I'm almost done with Pitfall translation, soon sync'ing it
EDIT: added some details

Hey guys,
Mike Matei was surprised not to see any French subtitles in this week's bundle. I think he's really looking forward to getting them.
Regards!

Hello there
thanks for the update. We got 10 translations finished. I though TechGuy would send it for you.
Can I send them to you and do updates if necessary later?
can I PM you the subs ?
@all: no offense here, but I did not hear from you, guys (except Yannick, François and TechGuy961) and Mike is expecting something.

Re: French Subs
I've started doing Top Gun, after your much-appreciated help regarding the softwares to use. :-)
It's actually easy to use, I should gather up steam quite soon hopefully.
I wouldn't mind doing a translation of the theme song (I've actually done it for Top Gun, so perhaps you guys can check it out when you proofread my translation of it all), which could - if some agreement is reached naturally - be used as the "official" French translation.
It would certainly be best to have one unique subtitled version for all tests, so as to avoid confusing the viewers.

cobalt : sorry ,I was absent yesterday night and today.
Who is in charge to send the subtitles to Juan ? And which ones should be sent ?
I think the ones that are on Gdrive should be sent, beacause they have been proofread (except episode 9 because it needs to be corrected )

So... You want me to send the files in the Drive to Juan then? Do you want me to do that? I couldn't do it sooner, I was gone all day.
As well, I updated the forum, and also, I will make necessary corrections for newcomers

Re: French Subs
Hi guys
I have granted Juan the Gdrive, so he was free to pick it up.
I have talked with François and he told me he is willing to do proofreading (François, if I am wrong, let me know). I am willing to do it also or syncing (if my work satisfies you all). I do not mind doing only job, whatever it is. I also do not mind doing it all from scratch.
So if we got a bunch of translators, then some proofreaders and sync'ers, that would be a good idea (as proposed by coolman). Finally we can also rotate the roles.
I offered the SRT yesterday because Mike was expecting something and I got no news But next sunday, I'm sure we'll have this process
Ah, one last thing: if people does not have the possibility to come to the forum to post some news, please say it. Communication is important. Even if people have to give up for personnal reasons. We all work for free here, by passion, let's try to build the team spirit.

Re: French Subs
Hello,
I indeed volunteer for proofreading ; I'd like to contribute SRTs too, but as I already explained to cobaltnightsky, I seem to have some software issues while trying to correctly handle VSS, and being almost utterly hopeless when it comes to using a computer, it would be best to use me where I can effectively help out.

Re: French Subs
Thanks François. There is an important thing to take into consideration: a translated text, as good as it is, must be shortened to fit the synchronization process. So the message must be there, but sometimes not exactly the same manner to express it (and sometimes with few details).

Yes, the thing is, it's kinda sad to maybe lose what makes the Nerd's quintessence, the colorful obscenity, in the process. ;-)

Re: French Subs
yep, but unluckily, sometimes...
EDIT: BTW, to my opinion, you should proofread sync'ed subtitles. The reason is to avoid doing the work twice and see if "simplified" text matches the main idea.
we are not a lot, let's keep it efficient.

Re: French Subs
Thanks Brenda
so we have:
TechGuy: contact to Juan, updates the forum here. Which role(s) do you want to handle?
BrendaLama: Translator, proofreader
François C: Proofreader
Yannick: Translator, proofreader, syncer (which one(s) would you like to take)
Coolman756: Translator, proofreader, syncer(which one(s) would you like to take?)
Cobaltnightsky: syncer, proofreader (I have finished the translation of pitfall)
François offers to take in charge the intro music (a big challenge ).
I will create a Gdoc with all AVGN insults and how you translated it.
Please note, this is not exclusive: if you want to do it all on your own, no problem. Just make sure that someone reads your work to avoid mistakes (grammar, sync, whatever) to keep a good quality.
Thanks to Coolman756 for all his great suggestions (and everyone else, of course)!

It's gonna be very hard to put me in a specific category... I'm a perfectionist... so, whatever you do, I'll end up reading every line of srt file and try to make everything as good as I can. I'm a bit busy since yesterday, so I wasn't very active, but I'm going to work tomorrow. By tommorrow night, the first 5 episodes will be 100% complete (to me) and at that time, your job will be to take a look at them and suggest improvements.

Re: French Subs
no problem, especially from your work, I know you know what you are talking about
if you want to do the whole process on your own, there is no problem. I (or someone else) will just take a look just for regular checkings (2 couples of eyeballs better than 1, isn't it? ^^ ). Well, instead, you should validate every SRT, to my opinion.
Other people like me are not so used of this process, so I guess it's easier to avoid mistakes by making it a workflow.
As you said: quality over quantity. Don't mind the mean, as long as we all do what we want: help James and Mike (and others).

Re: French Subs
In response to a few emails I have been getting on the same subject,
I just want to say that everyone here is doing a fantasic job so far in this project, and despite its ups and downs during the beginning, we are the most "talked-about" translation community on this forum. Again, as posted before, don't be afraid if you have "pop-ups" in your life (work, family, etc.) Better to know then to not know and getting scared on where you are.
Again, fantastic job to all so far, and here's hoping that we can get a few more people on board.
Alex (TechGuy691)
BTW, [Only admins are allowed to see this link]. Check if everything is said on there.

Re: French Subs
Salut tous.
Bonne continuation.
